About

Mike Vogel blogs here about stuff that may or may not be relevant and insightful.

One thing I dislike strongly is a lack of purpose… I want to know why I do things, I want to have reasons, not for the sake of knowledge, but when u get the “why behind the what” it will drive you and fire you up when you are doing tasks.

There are sometimes in life, if you are like me, when some of the people that serve with you are your close friends. With these people we sometimes have meetings and we sometimes just hangout. I think it’s good to have a clear distinction between the two, so each party knows what the appointment is for. You might be asking, “where are you going”??? Well… I’m getting there….

My old boss, whom I still refer to as my boss, is also a very close friend of mine. There are few people in this world I respect as much or more as i do this person. I think I worked so well with him because of friendship. I understood the boundaries of friendship and bossship and I helped him make it happen. In saying that, he never once was unprepared for a meeting, he never just talked about nothing when we had something in the books. He was intentional and specific when we had meetings for work.

If this guy who is a friend and boss can handle himself like that, than there is no reason why we can’t be like that when we meet with our volunteers and leaders. There is no need to sit in meetings and just talk or generalize. We need to be specific and intentional with all our meetings and appointments. There’s nothing worse than wasting a volunteers time. So do yourself a favor… Have a meeting with yourself a few minutes before your meetings with people and sort out where you want your meeting to go.

There you have it…don’t be vague, but be intentional…your leaders and volunteers will thank you for it…
